We may no longer have the Duchess of Cambridge’s maternity wardrobe to peruse but as she ventures in to this new stage of her life we can take a look at her new mum style, which at first glimpse seems to replicate her trademark classic styling.
You can’t have missed the images of Kate and William leaving the hospital with their baby son in coordinating and apt shades of blue. But what I loved most about Kate’s look is that she chose a blue and white spot empire line dress; a classic shape for maternity wear which nips in under the bust and flows over your bump. The key to this choice is that it showed, rather than hid her post-baby tum. Whether or not this was a conscious statement it puts out a great message to contrast that of the ‘back in my size zero jeans within a week’ celebrities we see in the press.
Looking back to my ‘coming home outfit’ back in 2011 of joggers, converse and a vest I’m grateful to have left our local NHS hospital late in the evening with no one around to care nor comment on what I was wearing. Though perhaps come baby no.2’s arrival later this year I may up my game, even if just for the family photo album. Well, if you’re going to announce the birth on a golden easel you need a decent ‘going home’ outfit!
Kate’s dress was a custom made Jenny Packham style from her SS13 collection but if you like this feminine and flattering look you can steal Kate’s new mum style below. Just be sure to team with some trusty LK Bennett wedges…
