Mum, Mom, Mummy, Mama, Mother. Whatever we call ourselves, it’s pretty awesome to be a mum in 2015.
We knew that already though, right? And whether mums are having a ‘fashion moment’ or not, I’d say The Motherhood Club is the best club to be a member of, its members are utterly privileged, but it’s also the hardest, most exhausting, all-consuming, life-changing club of all.
But why is it so great to be a mum right now? Because there’s never been so much choice for us and some seriously amazing mothers are taking our parenting status and running with it…
1. Showing your motherhood status is hot right now
It’s not enough just to cart a child around with you, no, because as I always get asked “are they yours?” one clearly needs to bear ones parenting status on ones chest. Cue founder of SelfishMother and creator of Mother Tees, Molly Gunn.

2. Dressing like a mum is where it’s at
I’m not talking Topshop’s Mom jeans, this is #dresslikeamum. The hot mama hashtag created by the mama with the best insta-poses, Zoë de Pass. Take a look through on Instagram and just see all the incredible mum style that scrolls before you.
I tried to bring new meaning to the word ‘mumsy’, but the fact is, it’s so engrained as a negative term in society’s mind that it was never going to change overnight.
But here is #dresslikeamum. It says it all, and proves that being a mother doesn’t suddenly make you less stylish, sartorially stilted or a fashion disaster; I know women who are more stylish since becoming mothers. So take that, mumsy-haters!

Yes, it can be more of a challenge to find looks which suit our new lifestyle and breastfeeding-friendly fashion is something that’s so hard to find we should all be supplied with a style detecting device in our Bounty packs on the maternity ward. I mean, who needs a gazillion leaflets shoved in a bag? We want to look and feel good pronto post-birth.
3. The best fashion bloggers are mums
Biased? Moi?
As much as I love to covet the style of those fashion bloggers who have become global stars in the world of style (I’m looking at you, Susie Bubble and Atlantic|Pacific) , it’s stylish mamas that really inspire me.
Putting together a wardrobe that will take you from mum duty to office appropriate, or school run to date night? Now that’s a challenge that mum style bloggers take on, and win.
4. Mothers meetings are cool
I remember being at school and chatting with my besties (probably discussing which member of Take That we’d date) and teachers telling us to break up our “Mothers meeting“. Of course we didn’t know what they were on about and after a quiet few seconds we’d start up again. Little did I know that in twenty-odd years time Mothers Meetings would be the hottest ‘club’ for the coolest mums, not just in London but in the UK.
You only have to look at founder, Jenny Scott to know it’s all about (as her brilliant book suggests) how to be a hip mama without losing your cool.
5. Twinning is winning
If you don’t dress in matching outfits with your child(ren) at least once in a while, be ashamed! OK, maybe that’s a bit harsh of me, but if you’re going to coordinate with anyone, with your own children is the coolest way to twin.
We all still remember those cringe-worthy coupley co-ord moments like Posh & Becks Versace leather look and Britney & Justin’s denim disaster, but put Mr Beckham and his boys in a matching Dad and Lad look (or even better, Dad and Daughter co-ord) and we’ll swoon along with our ovaries.
And yes, he is a dad, not a mum. But what’s the point of writing about how awesome it is to be a mum if you can’t mention the added appreciation we have for all those (especially hot) dads out there?

Yes, there’s also a number 6.
And yes, mamas are bang-on-trend, because I said so.
