Tutorial | How to create a DIY monogram t-shirt

Lettering on clothing and interiors have increased in popularity in the last couple of years with kids’ bedrooms awash with initialled decor and wall art and the High Street favouring varsity style bold lettering on mens’, womens’ and childrens’ wear.  Type ‘monogram’ into Pinterest and you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Combine this with a desire for personalised items which make great gifts or homemade keepsake projects, and who doesn’t love a truly bespoke item?

With this in mind and a penchant for crafts – which now need to be quicker and easier than ever (with a toddler under my feet) yet still giving great results – I fancied creating a one-off t-shirt for my tot.  I still had change from a fiver and she has a monogram t-shirt which in her words is “soo cute!“, so here’s how it’s done.

You will need

  • DIY monogram t-shirt | cocomamastyleT-shirt – I used a £2 Primark kids’ long sleeved top but you could use one you already have.
  • Iron-on embroidered letter(s) – I visited my local haberdashery and picked these letters up for 50p each.  Also try Hobbycraft.
  • Iron
  • Clean tea towel
  • Needle and thread (optional)

    Total cost £3

 How to do it

If you’ve bought a new t-shirt, check it fits and you’re happy with it before going ahead – you won’t be able to return it once you’ve customised it!

  2. Ensure the fabric is clean and free of fluff where you want to apply the letters.
  3. Lie the letters on the top and adjust until you’re happy with the position – stripes give a great guideline if you’re fussy about getting it straight!
  4. Peel the backing from the letters and stick down on to the top.
  5. Place your tea towel over the letters and iron – checking the temperature recommended on the packaging of your letters.
  6. To secure the letters further you can also sew a simple stitch around the edge and you won’t have to worry about them falling off.
  7. Then plan your outfit!DIY monogram t-shirt | toddler style | baby kids style blog |cocomamastyle
