Outfit of the day | Autumn layers

When it comes to autumn style the key to success is mastering layering; with chilly starts and unpredictable weather during the rest of the day reach for lightweight layers to allow us to dress to cover all bases. But how to make it a considered, styled outfit and not just thrown on? Combine neutrals, textures and a splash of seasonal colour to pull it all together.

The absolute must-have in your autumn armoury is this lambswool gilet which acts as a top layer now and can then be worn underneath a coat when winter takes hold. The deep navy tone is so versatile it will soon become your go-to as you rush out of the door and the streamlined shape will skim curves while adding a belt will enhance those assets.

When it comes to jeans this season, lift your look with a lighter colour to contrast with darker outerwear; it’s easy to get stuck in a blue jeans rut so try something different to mix it up. Grey is a great option as it’s as wearable as regular denim and work with everything without having to think about what else to wear and if you’ve been rocking the skinny jean for a few years now, try a straight cut for a relaxed twist that’s comfortable too. Be sure to roll the hem for a flash of ankle for the most flattering finish.

Introduce texture with a great bag that’s not only practical with it’s cross body strap but also a good size for essentials and adds a hint of subtle colour to your look. With darker tones within an outfit, incorporate different materials to contrast and add interest; it’s these little details which give a polished finish to your style.

One of the key colours this season that’s surprisingly wearable is yellow and in particular it’s the warming, spiced ochres that will lift your autumn wardrobe and complement your neutrals. If you’re not sure about introducing a new colour into your looks try it in an accessory, it’s an inexpensive way to try something different without a big commitment and means you can add just an accent without going all out and having to think too much about whether or not the colour works for you.

It goes without saying that knitwear is a wardrobe essential at this time of year and a capsule collection of plain sweaters can be mixed and matched with ease. But that doesn’t mean plain means basic. Add a little luxury next to your skin with this supersoft merino and silk blend sweater, not only is it smooth and incredibly comfortable, it also has added details to elevate it from the ordinary. With a slight dipped hem, back seam detail and split cuffs it looks just as great alone as it does layered underneath your must-have sleeveless knit.
