It’s all well and good us dressing the part (of stylish mama, obvs) but if the man in your life is in need of a sartorial update here’s a quick fix style guide with Autumn/Winter must-haves for him. So drop some hints or just treat him to something new and he’ll soon be as on trend as you.
Clockwise from top left: Velvet blazer, Massimo Dutti | Maroon gilet, Uniqlo | Dark green roll neck, Zara | Leather backpack, Lyle and Scott | Check shirt, Massimo Dutti | Check trousers, Vivienne Westwood @ Garment Quarter | Scarf, Whistles | Boots, Clarks
The Velvet blazer
With this in his wardrobe there’s no excuse not to take you out for date night. Just add jeans (slim or skinny fit) and a shirt.
The gilet
An absolute essential for his weekend gear. Tempt him with maroon as an alternative to his favourite blues, greens and greys. It’s still got that uniform colour to it so it’s not too out there. Wear over roll necks or shirts and sweaters and even layer under a casual blazer.
The roll neck
I don’t know about you but there’s something about a man in a polo neck. Maybe it’s something to do with them looking incredibly good on Robert Redford back in the day, but before we get too distracted let’s stick to the style updates… The polo neck is not only a big trend for women this season but a hot look for men too. Just be sure to find one that’s not too snug on his neck.
The backpack
Up his accessory game with a smart leather backpack. Brown leather will age well even if he’s rough with it and this minimal style could even work well in your wardrobe so it wouldn’t hurt to borrow it once in a while, you know, for family days out.
The check shirt
Most men will own a check shirt (or 50 in the case of my father) so if he’s fond of the grid look, update it this season with a multi-tonal check. This Massimo Dutti shirt has a heritage feel with the muted autumnal tones that will work well with jeans and brown leather boots, oh, and the maroon gilet too. It’s all about the capsule style for the guys.
The check trousers
Try pushing him out of his comfort zone a little with a checked trouser. In grey, these trousers can easily be worked into his existing wardrobe and will change up his look for work or evening.
The scarf
Oh look, another check! But it’s the easiest way to add some pattern into a man’s wardrobe without scaring them completely. Look for lighter colour scarves if his outerwear is primarily in dark tones.
The brogue boot
If he lives in trainers for off-duty style then smarten him up with a practical and comfortable yet stylish boot. Just don’t let him do the tucked in jean thing à la One Direction because chances are, he’s old enough to be their father.
