Top 5 sales shopping tips and Baukjen picks

We are well and truly in the midst of sale season; the shops are packed with rail upon rail of discounted items and it’s usually the case that the things we lusted after earlier in the season are only left in someone else’s size. But as winter is really yet to take hold in the UK, we may not be ready to peruse the new collections just yet.

What should we buy in the sale to avoid the classic ‘buy it ’cause it’s cheap and never wear it‘ scenario, I hear you ask. Why, the luxe pieces which will cross seasons, transition trends and truly enhance our wardrobes of course.

Top 5 sales shopping tips

1. Avoid using the sales as a chance to try a new (for you) trend. You’ll try it once and realise you’ve nothing else in your wardrobe to complete the look or remember why you’ve never tried that must-have before, because it’s just not you.

2. Be honest with yourself when purchasing. Don’t buy something you’re unsure of with the mindset ‘I can always return it‘. We are much less likely to make the effort to return something if it’s cheaper or on sale and we’ve changed our minds.

3. Luxe fabrics like leather and suede in shapes you love or need to replace in (or complete) your wardrobe are good to pick up in the sale. Think key staples like the leather bag, jacket, trouser or skirt.

4. Think versatility. Love that top? If you can think of at least 5 ways to wear it, go for it. If not, take it out of your shopping basket.

5. Remember: it’s only a bargain if you need it (or love it and would have bought it at full price, obvs!).

Steal my sales style

The Sweater

Marlene v-neck jumper in lime, c/o Baukjen

Love? It’s neon. And merino. Ergo I love it.

Need? I usually wear round neck sweaters but in the colder months I often opt for slim fitting roll necks. A slouchier v-neck knit is a great way to mix up my basics and layer, adding interest with a different neckline. If you’re blessed with a bigger bust, this deep v-neck will flatter no end.

Versatile? It is an instant way to lift black and inject fun into a look while also working well paired with light grey and denim to soften this acid-toned sweater. Shape-wise it’s as at home with a slim pencil skirt or leather leggings as it is with a relaxed fit jean for easy weekend style.

Harlow cropped leather leggings,  c/o Baukjen

Love? Buttery soft leather. Nuff said.

Need? It’s no secret I adore a leather legging, though mine have all been faux because leather has felt too thick and lacking the stretch you get with PU panel leggings – until now. Hello comfort, stretch and style. I have previously always chosen ankle length and a skinny fit. So yes, there is a gap in my wardrobe (I will squeeze them in) for a more grown-up leather trouser that’s less biker babe/Olivia Newton John and more street chic.

Versatile? Day to night, work to weekend, date to mum-duty. I could write a book on ways to wear leather leggings. Need I say more?
