Outfit of the day | relaxed skinny jeans

Leather, faux fur and denim are all frequent players in my personal winter lookbook so this outfit is not groundbreaking stuff and you will probably yawn at the mention of these staples that feature so heavily in my wardrobe. But I was keen to share my latest denim purchase and show another way to wear my seasonal must-haves – without skinnies.

I have been struggling recently with jeans, I love a skinny but I’ve found it hard to find just the right pair that fit and flatter in all the right places. I find it easy to get the perfect shape and cut of jean for my personal styling clients but when it comes to myself I often draw a blank. Zara was always my go-to for simple blue skinny jeans but I’m sad to say I’ve fallen out of love with their cut and fabric over recent seasons.

The denim

While shopping before Christmas (sans children) I took the opportunity to nip into Muji after spotting a wall of jeans through the window.  I was pleasantly surprised with the wash options on offer and the choice of fits. Sadly the skinnies weren’t quite right for my shape but the relaxed skinny jeans were perfect; fitted in the right places and relaxed in the leg with enough length to roll up.

Completing the look

As always my rule with a tonal look is to ensure there is plenty of texture to keep the outfit from looking flat. Cue the trusty quilted leather jacket and faux fur scarf combo – because navy and black do go! – and my wear-anywhere glitzy knit. A heeled boot is my winter essential but these jeans work equally well with flat and low-heeled suede boots for a more casual outfit. Keep the sparkly knit, or switch in a necklace and shirt to balance a more casual boot.

Accessories

A lighter toned or metallic bag (in my case both as we were travelling) will lift an all-over dark outfit and although I opted for black boots, a burgundy patent boot like this Kurt Geiger pair would be my top choice to really balance this look and add colour.
