Outfit of the day | Coatigan and coated skinnies

It’s so easy to get stuck in a style uniform but when you find something you love it’s hard not to wear variations on the theme when you know it works for you. If you’re a regular reader you will know I’m a fan of skinnies and boots so it will be no surprise to see another Outfit of the Day with this style template, it just works perfectly for my body shape and my lifestyle from mum-duty to stylist and freelancer and back again, so why change it too much?

Texture

“I look to texture; combining different tactile elements to enhance my style.”

To make this simple outfit formula a little more interesting – especially in the colder months when I lean towards darker colours – I look to texture; combining different tactile elements to enhance my style. In this toned-down outfit you’ll find suede, a smooth knit, leather-look, felted wool and chunky jewels. Not to mention the luxe faux fur (scroll down) I added when there was a nip in the air, while still toning it in with the rest of the outfit in navy.  cocomamastyle | outfit of the day | needle knits | mama style

Embellishment

Embellished knitwear is everywhere this season but for the easiest in throw-it-on style (and for the purposes of throwing it in the wash), take your basic sweaters and add a single colour jewelled necklace that sits around the neckline to recreate the look. And when you just want that simple jumper for relaxing at home and cosying up on the sofa with the littlies, you can reclaim its simplicity, sans jewels.

The coatigan

I’ve had so many compliments while wearing this knit, whether you call it a cardi, coat or coatigan it’s the perfect top layer for every day autumn style. It’s warm enough to wear as a coat but has all the comfort and ease of your favourite cardigan for running after little ones.  But not only is it easy to wear and practical for mum-ing in, the added interest of the flecked knit, block colour panel and mouldable collar (to work different looks) make it smarter than your average cardi-coat.  And while on the subject of the collar; wear open and down as lapels for more of a v-neck if you are busty or wear up for a straighter, higher neckline which works well for the less well-endowed.

The jegging

“Pockets have the ability to shrink or enlarge a bottom with the merest millimeter of misplacement.”

And when it comes to compliments, these jeggings get just as many as the coatigan. Pre-babies I found jeggings too high-waisted but these days – two daughters and five years later – I’m grateful for their streamlining properties and comfort factor. But they must have just the right pockets. Pockets have the ability to shrink or enlarge a bottom with the merest millimeter of misplacement. Next got it spot on for me with these; an alternative to black coated skinnies (though they do come in black too), pockets in the right place to flatter if worn with a shorter top and thick enough to feel like more than a legging but thin enough not to overheat.
