Fast forward to SS16 |trends to wear now

Yes, you did read that right: SS16, as in spring/summer 2016.  Even though we may still be hoping to get more from our summer 2015 wardrobe before the month is out and longing for warmth stretching into September before we fully embrace autumn styles, I’m already thinking of next spring/summer.

It is useful to take a peek into fashion’s crystal ball because not only can we be one step ahead of the trends, it also means we can shop smart and invest in pieces (or bag a bargain in the end of summer sales) which will really have style staying power beyond one season.

So, if I’ve justified it enough, read on as I visited fashion trade show, Pure London recently and looked at some of the trends and key pieces we’ll be wearing next summer.

Colour & print

Gingham is big, bold and striking in monochrome, while stripes get updated with multi-coloured lines.  New look florals are heavily outlined and filled in with block colour but for a more relaxed summer print, opt for patched scarf prints and batik fabrics.

Pink is a key colour for this autumn and SS16 so don’t be afraid to invest now because you’ll be wearing it throughout the colder months and into next spring too.
SS16 basics are inspired by the ballet with all shades of nude for your base layers and aquamarine will brighten up your wardrobe in the sunshine.

Key pieces

The draped duster coat will ease you into autumn and back into spring again next year. Look for lighter, fluid fabrics in soft neutrals for your everyday jacket.  Alternatively go retro in an embellished denim trucker jacket; the more embroidery, colour and added detail, the better.

Step back to the 60s with a pastel-toned jacquard mini dress; pick one up now for a late summer wedding and you can bring it back out for next year’s round of nuptials. Another throwback to the past returns in the form of the polo shirt.  Choose between skinny fit or boyfriend fit, but always buttoned-up.

Mastered the jumpsuit? Update it now with a wide-legged version, preferably cropped for a culotte silhouette to skim hims and highlight the slimmest part of your leg. You may also be surprised how flattering a cropped flare can be so make like Alexa Chung and get your denim wardrobe up-to-speed.

Accessories

I’ve mentioned bucket bags before here so of course, you’ll already have one! But to get ahead of the fashion curve bag a white bucket style now.  Even better if it has eyelet details too.  Update your skater shoes with Vans’ lace-up model in nude for a fresh, minimalist twist on the heavily embellished styles we’ve seen over the past few seasons.  And if you want a bit of height, look no further than the classic clog. Love or loathe, they will be here!

More accessories take on the minimal guise and pared-down saddle bags (in those base nude tones mentioned above) will be the perfect accompaniment to your summer dress looks and feel more current than tan.  Hats won’t escape simple styling either as the classic boater brings straw hats into 2016.  Finish with thread-wrapped bracelets to add colour to these minimalist outfits.  Alternatively, you could just get your little one the new Crayola Thread Wrapper game. They get a new toy and you get your accessories updated while entertaining a child! Win win.

Are you already rocking these looks? What will you be investing in?
