Outfit of the day | khaki and black evening look

Yesterday I headed out with some fab fellow bloggers (NotAnotherMummyBlog, CoolBananas-Blog and MamasVIB if you’re asking!) to an event in North London at Drink, Shop, Do. All I knew was that we would be making Lego Robots (er, random!) and joining in with the cafe-shop-activity hub-bar’s 5th birthday celebrations.

It can be tricky to know what to wear when you’re not entirely sure what kind of evening you’ll have and you’ve not been to a venue before because you’re not sure of the tone. With this in mind I stuck to my fail safe ‘evening uniform’ of top + skinnies + heels.

Style formula

Not very original, admittedly, but it works for me and my shape and I’m always comfortable and confident wearing this formula which suits so many occasions. I regularly (well, nearly always!) wear jeans so switched to leather leggings to edge up my look for evening and popped on this khaki sleeveless shirt for a nod to utility styling. I often wear this top belted at the waist but (at my fiancé’s suggestion!) yesterday evening I wore it loose for a more relaxed feel against the leather.

Accessorising

I slipped on my fave BCBGeneration leopard heels; the perfect accompaniment to khaki and black, also adding some much needed pattern to my outfit.

My black saffiano leather Kate Spade bag added a daytime feel to the outfit, so if I’d turned up and the event was more casual than anticipated my outfit could have passed as ‘I’ve just finished work and came straight here‘ style (yes, I would wear this to work. As a stylist, leather leggings are a perfectly acceptable work garment!). A clutch could have felt too dressy for a midweek relaxed affair and my cute pineapple key ring (from brilliant leather designer brand And Mary) a bit of fun to my sensible tote.

Shady lady

These sunglasses have been amazing this summer, though this is actually my second pair after I sat on the first and they didn’t recover! Fortunately though I had anticipated my clumsiness and my daughters’ penchant for playing with Mummy’s sunglasses and bought two pairs at the time.  Of course I’m now regretting not buying a third pair as they are no longer in store at none other than *whispers* Lidl.

Yep, from my local budget supermarket for around £2.99 – I should’ve bought the whole stand! I adore my trusty Ray Ban gold aviators but sometimes (if there’s potential for me to lose them after a few glasses of bubbly I will leave them safely at home and pop on my budget sunnies instead.

So, Lidl, please, please bring these back in store so I can buy a few more pairs!

With that unpredictable weather still (hey, we live in the UK, I should just see that as a given, daily, shouldn’t I?) and not being sure what time I’d be heading back home later that evening I needed some kind of top layer just in case.

This jacket/cardi hybrid ticked all the boxes for completing this look. A bit shaggy and a touch sparkly, it added texture to contrast with the smooth leather leggings and pony skin style shoes, while keeping it as a neutral and fuss-free second black piece to the outfit. I really do think this carefully about building an outfit! The plain neckline, straight cut and hip length lends itself to pairing effortlessly with endless outfits so I’m pretty sure it will be making a regular appearance.
