In the second of this series of Runway to school run catwalk inspired looks, I’ve chosen one of Alexander Wang’s looks from Balenciaga’s AW14 collection. And as I said last time, it doesn’t have to be for the school run, it’s just a simple yet effective look that will hopefully inspire you in the morning when you’re rushing to find matching socks* and brush your hair while wrangling a child and/or baby out of the door.
*If it makes you feel better, I’ve pretty much given up on wearing matching socks these days…!

I was immediately drawn to this look on the catwalk with the unexpected zip detailing and the contrast of khaki and grey – basics in many a winter wardrobe – with violet. This bright accent gives the outfit a really fresh feel so when styling a high street look inspired by Balenciaga I’ve used the satchel as the splash of colour while the neon pink zip on this khaki coat adds interest without being an in-your-face statement zip, you know, in case that becomes, like, so 2014!
But the best thing about this coat? It’s waterproof, has a hood, and will cover your bottom. Aren’t those 3 things what we all long for in our mum-coat?!
A breton is certainly a safe option to team with these relaxed fit trousers and with the lack of print elsewhere, stops the whole look from being too plain. And well, any excuse for a stripe, hey! The white edging on the model’s heels instantly reminded me of chunky-soled Superga trainers and in this charcoal grey not only do they work perfectly with this look they’ll not look too scruffy too quickly (I’m a mum after all, we have to think practically here!) and also will get maximum wear thanks to their neutral colour.
If you’re stuck in a bit of a jeans rut, try some relaxed, jogger-style trousers like these. The seams and faux leather trim give these a more tailored feel so they’re effortless, on-trend and practical and will look great with everything from tees to soft knits, chunky knits and shirts.
