The humble sweatshirt, a thing of comfort but not necessarily style you may think. Well think again, for the fashion gods are handing easy-style to us on a plate this season. This may be the same basic crew neck jumper that conjures up images of Fruit of the Loom sweats back in the day but it’s how you wear it that makes all the difference in the 2010’s.
To keep you on the right track here are the 10 rules of sweatshirt style to dress by:
Pushing up the sleeves = instant fash-factor.
Embellish, embellish, embellish. One should never need an excuse to bling-it-up.
Use a dark neutral (black, grey or navy) to make colours pop.
Opt for long, lean lines with your outerwear for a smarter vibe.
Try tucking a sweatshirt in to a full skater skirt.
Dress down a leather or sequin pencil skirt with a neutral sweatshirt.
Layer a longer top in a lighter fabric underneath to draw attention away from your tum if it’s an area you’re conscious of.
If you’re petite team a short jacket with your sweatshirt to keep in proportion.
Want to wear your sweatshirt with trainers? Be sure to add print, sparkle or luxe textures into the mix.
And finally, don’t wear with tracksuit bottoms unless you’re at the gym! It’s about taking sportswear up a stylish notch for day-wear, not slumming it.
To get you inspired and illustrate some of these rules I’ve put together 6 outfits with H&M’s basic sweatshirt in black, blue and pale pink.
