How to wear | The leather skater skirt

The last few years have seen leather or rather, pleather leggings become the norm on the high street and we’ve talked about them here on CocoMamaStyle.  After all, anything wipe clean in a mama’s wardrobe has got to be a good thing, surely?!  Well this season is seeing fashion still fixated on leather and faux-leather detail and the key piece in store and online is the skater-style full skirt in this love-it-or-hate-it fabric.

The question is, is it mum-propriate?  With a little thought (which I have conveniently done for you!) most items can be worked into your mama wardrobe in one way or another if you’re keen to stay up there in the style-stakes whether on mum-duty or not and the leather(-ette) skater skirt is no exception.

Look 1: Cosy up in a chunky Aran knit sweater, felt hat and boots.

Just add…

thick woolen tights or leggings to complete this look for the school run, a mummy lunch or weekend away.

Why it works:

Show off great legs in a shorter length skirt and add bulk up top if you’re petite or have a smaller bust with a sweater and scarf.  Keep it sleek with a wedge heel and match your boot colour to your leg wear (i.e. black on black) for the ultimate leg-lengthening effect.

Felt hat, H&M; Skull print scarf, BeckSondergaard @ The Dressing Room; Jumper, H&M; Faux leather skirt, Warehouse; Wedge boots, Next

Look 2: Real leather in a longer length gives this skirt a luxe edge.

Just add…

a boxy Chanel-style cardigan-jacket for a ladylike leather look.

Why it works:

Defining your waist by nipping in at your smallest point this skirt then flows over your hips and sits on your knee for a more grown-up finish.  Wear over a buttoned up shirt with ballet flats for a modern take on a retro style.Look 2

Look 3: If full-on leather doesn’t float your style boat dip your toe into the water with a faux-leather trimmed skirt.

Just add…

a slick of red lippie and you’re ready for date night. Or a blazer and black opaques for a work meeting.

Why it works:

It’s oh-so elegant but has far more trend cred than adding a plain black skirt.  Again, tuck in your top to highlight your slim waist while contrasting stripes add a continental twist to take the skater skirt from grunge girl to super chic.  A pop of coloured gems completes the outfit without being fussy.
