mama loves… Topshop

As if getting to grips with a new baby and working out how to feed wasn’t hard enough already, you then have to master manoeuvring them when out and about and fumbling with awkward tops, clips, scarves and the rest.  Once you’ve mastered it you soon tire of the, lets face it, dull offering of nursing wear on the market.  I know I certainly did, so I searched for normal clothes that would work for breastfeeding with easy access and that weren’t bland and boring; a printed loose top to lift up with a vest underneath to pull down, a chiffon blouse to unbutton with a scarf or muslin on hand for coverage.
Look beyond the traditional maternity and nursing brands and with a bit of effort you’ll find some gems in regular shops, in this case, Topshop.  When I spotted these sheer drape tops on Topshop.com my first thought was, hooray! pretty, stylish, AND practical for mums.   They have an opening in the front (and back) which is just perfect for tucking baby in for feeding in style and starting at £30 for the sleeveless block colour styles, they won’t stretch your SMP too far.
How to wear:
    • Layer over a cami (for obvious reasons).  I like Topshop’s scallop edge vest, their modern classic that every mum should own.  I was given one for my birthday a week after my daughter was born and wore it all the time.  They wash really well, dry in a flash and the raw scalloped edge is great for layering without obvious lines underneath.  Not to mention the loose fit which skims your mummy tummy beautifully.
    • Wear with jeans for dressed up daywear and add a Chanel-inspired box cardigan.
    • For weddings these are a great solution to that what to wear dilemma, teamed with a skirt.  Think pleated chiffon, neutral jersey pencil or the new crop of sheer maxis with mini underskirt.  Throw on a jacket and you’re good to go, without having to undress to the waist and feed in the loo.
I just wish I’d seen these sooner so I got to make use of them, but I’m sharing them now in the hope that maybe they’ll make even one nursing mum know she can feel good and look good too.  I’ll post more tips for nursing wear as a whole but couldn’t wait to share these!
